Contemporary style is one of the more popular design schemes used today but has been used in homes for many years. This sleek design style is known for its clean, straight lines when it comes to furnishings as well as for lighting options.
A pendant light, sometimes called a drop or suspender, is a lone light fixture that hangs from the ceiling usually suspended by a cord, chain, or metal rod. Pendant lights are often used in multiples, hung in a straight line over kitchen countertops and dinette sets or sometimes in bathrooms. Pendants come in a huge variety of sizes and vary in materials from metal to glass or concrete and plastic. Many modern pendants are energy-saving low voltage models and some use halogen or fluorescent bulbs. A billiard or island light is a longer pendant fixture, usually with long fluorescent or multiple incandescent bulbs, used over kitchen islands and billiard tables. They are sometimes considered a type of chandelier. It is a key component to understanding Architectural lighting design and sometimes associated with interior design.
While the color used in many contemporary themed rooms tends to be primary the contemporary ceiling lights will often include a mixture of silver and white in the creation. There are some manufacturers that will have soft earth tones added into their lighting creations.
Chandeliers are also known as suspension or chain-hung fixtures. Like ceiling fixtures, chandeliers are also hung from the ceiling. However, they require more space in addition to adding more pizzazz compared to regular ceiling fixtures. They provide general lighting and have at least two arms with down-lights or up-lights. They are most often used with formal dining rooms or dining tables.
